PHIL 227 - Philosophy of WorkFC ARHU 4 credits This course explores one of the most pervasive yet often unexamined dimensions of human life: work. We begin by asking what the value of work is-whether it is merely a means of earning a living or a central part of human flourishing, identity, and community. We then examine work in capitalist societies, analyzing how it is structured, how it shapes social relations, and how it is experienced by workers. The course addresses ethical questions within the workplace as well as businesses’ obligations to the broader community. Finally, we consider alternatives beyond capitalism and the future of work, given developments in automation and AI.
Prerequisites: one course in PHIL.
