ARTH 205 - Art and Architecture of Ancient and Medieval Spain

Art and architecture of the Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal) from antiquity to c. 1500. After starting with ancient Roman remains, we will survey Christian, Muslim and Jewish art. The class will explore how objects and buildings contributed to contact and conflict between these three religious groups. Works to be studied include Segovia’s aqueduct, Córdoba’s Mosque and Synagogue, the Alhambra, and Santiago de Compostela. Recommended preparation: one 100-level course in ARTH.
