NSCI 435 - Senior Seminar The role of Glia during Neurodegenerative Disease and Psychiatric DisordersFC NSMA WADV 4 credits Glia were once thought to be brain glue supporting neurons. Now, there is strong evidence that microglia and astrocytes are of critical importance during health and disease. Microglia and astrocytes function as immune cells and produce inflammation in response to tissue damage or infection. When neurons are exposed to inflammation produced by glia, neuron death can occur resulting in neurodegeneration. Students will discuss primary literature in small groups, use primary literature to identify major questions in the field, and practice scientific writing based on primary literature. Sample topics include glia during Alzheimer’s disease, Multiple sclerosis, stress, depression, Autism, and Schizophrenia. This course is restricted to Senior NSCI majors only.
