FYSP 009 - Managing Political Disagreement

FC SSCI QFR WINT
4 credits
Profound division has become a defining feature of modern politics in the United States and elsewhere. Conflicts over important policy issues and fundamental political values may impact not only the functioning of government and democracy, but also relationships and interactions between individuals in everyday life. Political differences may even create wedges between friends and family, often with no clear path to reconciliation or compromise. This seminar examines the nature and origins of political disagreements at both system-wide and interpersonal levels, how they are portrayed and influenced by politicians and the media, and how individuals and societies may navigate and, perhaps, resolve such conflicts.
