CAIS 100 - Introduction to Critical AI StudiesFC ARHU 4 credits Today, claims about the promises and perils of AI have permeated public discourse. Conflicting predictions range from revolution to disaster across manifold applications-from industry to warfare to art. This course critically assesses the implications of this prominent technology by situating AI within broader systems of power, production and ecology that have shaped the centuries-long project of automating human labor and mental processes. We examine the underlying mechanisms and tools that the phrase “artificial intelligence” invokes, explore the historical, cultural, and political-economic conditions that underpin contemporary AI systems, and consider consequences for issues such as labor, justice and environmental politics.
