FREN 390 - The Film Artist Agnès Varda, From Photography to InstallationsFC ARHU CD 4 credits Agnès Varda is a filmmaker worthy of a full semester of study. Active from 1955 to 2018, she began as a photographer and “accidentally” became a director, exploring fiction and documentary, short and feature-length forms, political engagement, and poetic abstraction. Later, she expanded into museum installations and forged new relationships with audiences. This course examines her concept of “Cinécriture,” a holistic approach in which every creative choice-lighting, location, framing, editing-constitutes the film’s writing. We will also explore her relationship to the male-dominated French New Wave, her activism, and her unique practice of self-narration. Course taught in English.
Prerequisites: CIME 290/ENGL 291 or FREN 320/CIME 250.
