GERM 367 - History Through Cinema: A Divided Nation in German Film

HC ARHU CD
2 credits
An exploration of cinema as a profound reflection on the 20th century’s turbulent history, this course focuses on the works of German filmmakers grappling with the traumatic past, the unsettled present, and the ambiguous future. We will discuss the Expressionist experiments of the 1920s, film as the Nazi’s propaganda tool, the existential wanderings of the post-WWII New German Cinema, the artistic subversions of the East Germany’s Socialist regime, and the cinematic representations of the identity struggle in the reunified but still deeply divided nation. Readings, subtitles, and discussion in English. Includes an option to submit written coursework in German.
