AAST 284 - Somatics: AfriCognoSomaticsFC ARHU CD 4 credits A decolonial, Africana-centered approach to somatics and embodied thinking. The course treats feeling as knowledge and movement as a mode of cognition, drawing on Africana and other non-Western frameworks of sensation, rhythm, time, and relational awareness. Through guided improvisation, breath work, rhythm practice, floorwork, and reflective writing, students develop coordination, regulation, and creative choice-making. The course foregrounds relational somatics: how bodies register one another, how movement lands socially, and how groove, proximity, and collective rhythm shape perception and response. Emphasis is placed on transferable skills for movement practices, performance, wellness, and creative research. Open to all levels; no prior experience required. This course can be repeated once for credit.
This course is appropriate for new students. This course is cross-listed with DANC-284
