Surrealism is best-known as an early twentieth-century Parisian artistic movement preoccupied by dreams, automatism, the unconscious, and the marvelous. While often associated with European figures like Salvador Dalí, André Breton, and Luis Buñuel, surrealism also took root globally, inspiring artists and writers from Prague to Cairo, Martinique to Mexico, Chicago to Tokyo. This course examines both surrealism’s early history and its global afterlives, with particular attention to its complex political entanglements. Ranging across literature, art, and cinema, we will explore how various global communities have claimed and transformed surrealism in ways that challenge imperialist or hegemonic power.
