HIST 166 - Modern African HistoryFC SSCI CD 4 credits This course offers an overview of major developments in sub-Saharan African history from the nineteenth century to the present. We trace the rise and impacts of colonial rule, the growth of nationalist movements, and the complex processes of decolonization and nation-building. We pay particular attention to social, cultural, and religious change in Africa, including urbanization, shifting gender dynamics, and economic transformation, as well as contemporary political challenges. Through literature, film, and primary source documents, we consider diverse perspectives from the African continent and explore the myriad ways Africans have shaped global history.
This course is appropriate for new students.
