HIST 252 - Colonialism and Decolonization Through Francophone Film

FC SSCI CD
4 credits
In this course, we explore the processes of colonialism and decolonization in the Francophone world via a cinematic lens. We examine how French, African, and Asian filmmakers have documented and portrayed cultural and social life under colonialism, anti-colonial resistance, independence movements, and postcolonial struggles. Combining historical research with critical analysis, the course shows how cinema does more than depict the past-it shapes how it is remembered. By analyzing films, we uncover the political struggles over how colonialism and resistance are interpreted and reimagined in France and its former colonies.

This course is appropriate for new students.
