FYSP 023 - The Academy and the ArenaFC SSCI WINT 4 credits Over the last 150 years, American universities have facilitated the evolution of intercollegiate sports from student-run activities into today’s multi-billion dollar enterprise. This seismic shift has created an expansive industry with interests often distinct from the educational and community purposes initially intended. In this course, students will explore the history, philosophy, politics, portrayals, and pitfalls of the world of NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association) and intercollegiate athletics. As a charter member of the NCAA, Oberlin College is a player in this exploration of key questions related to the moral, political, and cultural impacts of sports on higher education.
