HIST 428 - Dungeons to Panopticons: A Long Carceral HistoryFC SSCI CD WADV 4 credits This historiography course introduces students to the field of carceral studies in Medieval Southern Europe, the early Americas, and the modern United States. Students will examine the major theoretical works that launched carceral studies before digging into the long past of the prison. We engage with various approaches to imprisonment and how academics and activists have critiqued and called for the end to the prison-industrial complex. Students in this course will engage with discussions on reform and abolition, critique foundational philosophies in the field and gain a nuanced understanding of the history of incarceration and deportation.
