THEA 255 - Latiné Theater History: Visions, Voices, and Boundless Futures

FC ARHU CD PRAX
4 credits
This course will survey, and wrestle with, the expanding strands of Latiné theater-making in America.  What is Latinidad? How are stories, artists, and forms given this definition? Using Teatro Campesino’s founding in 1965 to launch, the course will investigate regional histories and aesthetics that define Latiné Theater. The class features scripts from (and conversations with) playwrights and performance artists who create work that codifies, disrupts, and/or complicates these definitions: María Irene Fornés, Migdalia Cruz, Luis Alfaro, Caridad Svich, Marga Gomez, Guillermo Gómez Peña, and more! The class will culminate in a showcase of scenes and original performances.

This course is appropriate for new students.
