ARTH 203 - Architectural Modernities in China and Its Global Entanglement

This course examines architectural modernism in China from the late 19th century through the early 21st century. Students will explore how architectural modernity emerged in China as a result of transnational connections and domestic frictions. Topics include architectural modernism in Manchuria, Chinese architecture’s engagement with Beaux-Arts tradition, treaty port architecture, architecture and nationalism, socialist architecture in the Mao era, postsocialist reform, and export of China’s architectural modernism.

Prerequisites: one 100-level course in ARTH.
