ARTH 203 - Architectural Modernities in China and Its Global EntanglementFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course examines architectural modernism in China from the late 19th century through the early 21st century. Students will explore how architectural modernity emerged in China as a result of transnational connections and domestic frictions. Topics include architectural modernism in Manchuria, Chinese architecture’s engagement with Beaux-Arts tradition, treaty port architecture, architecture and nationalism, socialist architecture in the Mao era, postsocialist reform, and export of China’s architectural modernism.
Prerequisites: one 100-level course in ARTH.
