ARTS 442 - Themes in European Landscape Painting, 1600-1900 3HU
Second Semester. Since its emergence as an independent genre in the 16th century, landscape painting has taken on many forms and perspectives. This seminar examines the various themes and motifs associated with the depiction of the natural landscape in European art from the early 17th century to the end of the 19th century. All of the major schools of painting will be considered, with particular focus on the northern countries and France. Works of art (paintings and drawings) in the Allen Memorial Art Museum will feature in the discussions and assignments.
