Piano Pedagogy Minor


The minor consists of a minimum of 22 credits (5.5 full courses or the equivalent) and a practical teaching requirement.

Declaring the Minor


  • The minor is open to students earning a Bachelor of Music degree and for whom piano is the principal instrument.
  • The student must have the approval of the piano department and of a sponsoring piano pedagogy faculty member.
  • Students must declare their intention to pursue this minor at the end of the sophomore year. The student must have successfully completed PACE 210  or PACE 211 , and have demonstrated significant potential in the teaching portion of that course.

Piano Pedagogy Minor Non-Course Requirement(s)


  • Practical Teaching Requirement
    • eight student-semesters of teaching in the supervised teaching program
      • One student-semester is defined as the instruction of one student for a period of one semester. The total may represent any combination of teaching loads over the course of several semesters (e.g., a requirement of eight student-semesters might be fulfilled by teaching two students per semester for four semesters, or four students per semester for two semesters).
      • Continuity in teaching the same collegiate and/or young students over a period of consecutive semesters is encouraged.
