Students graduating with a minor in Jewish studies have gone into academic careers, the rabbinate, and Jewish education and communal work, as well as varied professional careers (e.g., law, politics) enriched by grounding in Jewish historical experiences, texts, and critical analysis. Many of our minors find that Jewish studies complements other fields, and undertake additional majors, minors, or integrative concentrations.

Note(s) on Requirements

  • Courses must come from at least two cross-listed departments (art history, comparative literature, history, politics, or religion). Jewish studies courses are identified by cross-listed departments below.

Transfer of Credit Toward the Minor

The Jewish studies program will accept up to the equivalent of one full course of transfer credit to count toward the Jewish studies minor requirements. Two types of approval are needed. (1) Approval from the Office of the Registrar that the transfer course meets Oberlin’s transfer-of-credit eligibility standards and (2) approval from the department/program chair that the course(s) may count to the minor. Current students taking post-matriculation credit must secure this approval before registering for course(s). Students who enter Oberlin as transfer students will have their pre-matriculation credit evaluated by the Office of the Registrar for elective credit, and they can later seek approval from the department/program for applying coursework to minor requirements.
