Performance Major: Harp Concentration

The performance major: harp concentration consists of a minimum of 160 credits, a private study committee examination requirement, and a performance requirement.
Note: No credit with a grade lower than D may be counted toward the requirements of the concentration.

Summary of Requirements

- Students must register for a large ensemble elective course every semester in residence as assigned. Double-degree students must complete eight semesters. Transfer students are expected to register every semester on campus.
- First-year harp concentrators are invited, but not required, to take APST 814 during their first two semesters.
- Two performances on a student recital (division, studio, or honors recital) are expected before the junior recital.

Large Ensemble Elective Courses

First Major Committee Examination
- Administered in the second semester of the first year.
- Consists of
- The examining committee for the first major committee is composed of the principal private study teacher and the conductors of the large instrumental ensembles.
Second Major Committee Examination
- Administered in the second semester of the second year.
- Consists of
- The examining committee for the second major committee is composed of the principal private study teacher and the conductors of the large instrumental ensembles.
- As part of the second major committee, students should propose a focus area for elective courses.
Junior Recital
Note: Two performances on a student recital (division, studio, or honors recital) are expected before the junior recital. - Administered in the second semester of the junior year.

Senior Recital
- Administered in the second semester of the senior year.
- Senior-year Winter Term is typically used for final project development.
- The senior project is a final performance project in the student’s chosen area of focus. The format is to be proposed by the student in consultation with their principal private study teacher and must include a performance element; this can be a recital, research-based project, outreach project, composition and performance, teaching project, improvisation project, recording arts project, mixed media project, etc.
