Performance Major: Trombone Concentration


The performance major: trombone concentration consists of a minimum of 160 credits, a private study committee examination requirement, and a performance requirement.

Note: No credit with a grade lower than D may be counted toward the requirements of the concentration.

  • Students must register for a large ensemble elective course every semester in residence as assigned. Double-degree students must complete eight semesters. Transfer students are expected to register every semester on campus.
  • APST 110  and APST 111  must be completed before the senior recital may be scheduled.

Private Study Committee Examination Requirement

First Major Committee Examination

  • Administered in the second semester of the first year.
  • Consists of two parts:
    • The performance of a prepared etude or solo selected by the principal private study teacher.
    • A scales test. A student who fails this test must repeat it at the end of each semester of study until completed satisfactorily.
Second Major Committee Examination

  • Administered in the second semester of the second year.
  • Consists of two parts:
    • The performance of a prepared solo with piano accompaniment.
    • A sight-reading test, which includes challenging problems of rhythm and interval structure. At the discretion of the department, a student whose performance on this test does not measure up to departmental standards may be given the opportunity to repeat this part of the examination at the end of the following semester of study.
Third Major Committee Examination

  • Administered in the second semester of the third year.
  • Consists of an orchestral audition for which the student will prepare the equivalent of a professional orchestral audition with excerpts selected by their principal private study teacher; the faculty committee will choose excerpts from the prepared group as time permits.
Junior Recital

  • Administered in the first or second semester of the junior year.
  • Consists of a substantial public performance subject to Concert Production policies. The principal private study teacher guides the student’s choice of repertoire and preparation. Memorization is optional.
Senior Recital

Note: APST 110  and APST 111  must be completed before the senior recital may be scheduled.

  • Administered in the first or second semester of the senior year.
  • Consists of a substantial public performance subject to Concert Production policies. The principal private study teacher guides the student’s choice of repertoire and preparation. Memorization is optional.
