AAST 254 - Independent Africa, 1957-1994 FC SSCI CD 4 credits This course explores the history of independent Africa between 1957 and 1994. It begins with the process of decolonization and eventual departure of European colonial rule in parts of tropical Africa, then turns to discussions of independent Africa’s politics, economies and societies. The major themes of the course include the Second World War and Africa, the winning of independence, legacies of colonial rule, the role of the military in independent Africa, the dilemmas of development, attempts at democratization, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The course will emphasize African perspectives, without ignoring non-African ideas of independent Africa. This course is cross-listed with HIST 254
