ARTH 329 - Cultural Property? Art, Heritage, OwnershipFC ARHU CD WADV 4 credits This course considers the issues and stakes that underlie antiquities and their export to disparate contexts to explore the larger question: who owns the past? We will examine positions on ‘cultural property’ from the perspective of archaeologists, art historians, collectors and museums, and explore issues of nationalism and national heritage, (illicit) trade and forgery, the preservation of world monuments, and recent legal cases. Students will research case studies and argue positions in the debate. Prerequisites & Notes: An intermediate-level (200-level, formerly 300-level) course in ARTH or consent of the instructor.
