An introduction to the history, development, meanings, and cultural practices associated with French creole. Case studies will include the island nations of Haiti and Mauritius and the French Overseas Departments of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Topics will include the history of French colonization, the development of creole languages, and the cultural contexts, such as music, literature, religious ritual, and food production, in which French creole is used today.
