RUSS 240 - Wild RussiaFC ARHU CD 4 credits Russia is still by many measures a wild place. Poised ambiguously between Europe and Asia, it boasts vast swaths of relatively untouched wilderness. It also has a unique and deeply layered tradition of engaging, depicting, and thinking about the natural world. Drawing on texts ranging from Turgenevs Notes of a Hunter to Pelevins The Werewolf Problem in Central Russia and Svetlana Alexievich Voices from Chernobyl, as well as films such as Tarkovskys Stalker, the course explores the complex and vexed ways in which Russians have negotiated the thin line between nature and culture over the past two hundred years. In English.
