PSYC 432 - Seminar on Collective MemoryFC SSCI WADV 4 credits Communities are shaped, at least in part, by shared memories of its past. These memories shape a community’s identity, provide expectations for its future, and mitigate or exacerbate intergroup tensions. This course is concerned with the way in which these memories are formed, maintained, and transmitted. Topics will include shared representation of history, flashbulb memories, collective imagination, and the formation of collective memories for recent public events. Readings will include relevant literature from anthropology, history, political science, sociology, and psychology, but the emphasis will be on the contributions of psychology to the study of collective memory. Prerequisites & Notes: PSYC 100, PSYC 200, PSYC 207 or permission of instructor.
