MHST 333 - The Racial Politics of Classical MusicFC CNDP, DDHU CD 4 credits As practitioners and academics have deepened their exploration of the issue of race in various artistic fields, one result has been a flood of articles and books examining systemic racism in the performance and pedagogy of classical music. This course provides students with an overview of the relevant literature at the intersection of race and classical music. Particular attention is paid to challenges surrounding the integration of Black American musical idioms and styles within classical music. Topics covered include culturally responsive pedagogy; critical race theory; Black musical aesthetics; decolonization; and anti-racism. Prerequisites & Notes: MHST-101 Music History 101 or other introductory musicology courses are suggested.
