FYSP 169 - Decolonizing Global CapitalismFC SSCI WINT 4 credits Why is capitalist development uneven? Karl Marx argued that capitalism started with “the discovery of gold and silver in America, the extirpation, enslavement, and entombment in mines of the aboriginal population; the beginning of the conquest and looting of the East Indies; [and] the turning of Africa into a warren for the commercial hunting of black skins.” In this course, we will explore how capitalism relies on the creation of a racial “other” to be oppressed and exploited, from its beginnings through today, in Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
