ENVS 223 - Surviving America: Introduction to Native StudiesFC SSCI CD 4 credits This course introduces students to the central themes and issues in Native American and Indigenous Studies. Engaging Indigenous methodologies, students will examine the history, politics, economies, knowledge, and cultures of Indigenous people of the western hemisphere with an emphasis on North America. Tracking the historical persistence and contemporary articulations of Native sovereignties, cultures, and knowledge systems in the context of North American settler colonial state formation this course explores the broad implications these entanglements have for social, political, economic, and environmental justice. Trafficking on a wide array of materials, this course is divided into three sections: “History: Touching on the Past, Looking to the Future,” “Persistence: Indigenous Knowledges, Literatures, and Expressive Cultures,” and “Resurgence: Decolonization as a Framework for Contemporary Social Justice Movements.” This course is cross-listed with CAST 223
