HIST 256 - Immigration in U.S. HistoryFC SSCI CD 4 credits Historian Oscar Handlin once famously declared that the history of immigration is the history of the United States. This course will therefore offer an overview of immigration and migration to and within the United States from the 19th to the early 21st centuries. As part of the course, students will examine migration narratives and rhetoric surrounding migration in American political discourse. As a transnational history, students will learn about the root causes of migration and why the United States became a destination for many immigrants. Conversely, this class will examine the evolution of immigration control and the history of xenophobia in American history.
This course is cross-listed with CAST-256
