POLT 112 - Capitalism and Democracy in the US and Europe
FCSSCI4 credits The relationship between capitalism and democracy has long been the subject of debate. Can democratic governments reign in capitalist markets? Is the balance of power between capitalism and democracy stable over time or prone to change? How does the relationship between capitalism and democracy vary across countries? This course explores the co-evolution of capitalism and democracy in the US and Europe since 1950, identifying which factors shape the balance of power between capitalism and democracy, examining how this balance has shifted back and forth over time, and considering why these shifts matter for the wellbeing of different groups in society.
