RELG 135 - Introduction to Religion: Devotion and Dissent in South Asian PerformanceFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course considers how South Asian religious communities have used storytelling and sung poetry to express both devotion and social dissent across medieval and modern contexts. Centering the performances of women and other marginalized people within Sikh, Hindu, and Muslim traditions, among others, we will explore how expressions of devotion and dissent vary across historical periods and geographical locations, yet similarly respond to enduring systems of power, including those of gender and caste. Students will also learn practical skills in podcasting as a means of storytelling and engagement with course themes.
This course is cross-listed with GSFS-135
