SOCI 214 - Get Up, Stand Up! Collective Behavior and Social Movements
FCSSCICD4 credits What are social movements? Why do people protest? How do social movements decide what strategies and tactics to use in their activities? What makes a social movement successful? These are some questions this course addresses. We explore the origins, operations, and consequences of social movements via sociological theory and empirical case studies with a focus on both structural (e.g., access to resources and political processes) and cultural (e.g., framing, identities, and emotions) forces that animate and constrain collective behavior. We will examine a variety of social movements, including for Civil Rights, feminism, environmentalism, and LGBT rights.
