ENGL 319 - Films of the Global DiasporaFC ARHU WINT 4 credits Diaspora filmmakers navigate the precarities of migrancy and the intensification of globalization. This course focuses on Mira Nair’s Mississippi Masala (1992), Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel (2006), Babak Anvari’s Under the Shadow (2016), Jon M. Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians (2018), John Akomfrah’s The Stuart Hall Project (2013) and Gurinder Chadha’s Bend it Like Beckham (2003), as it explores immigration, diasporic return narratives, sexuality and same-sex desire in the diaspora, and gendered experiences. Critical works on the diaspora include Arjun Appadurai (1996), Stuart Hall (1990), Pheng Cheah (2006), Robin Cohen (2010), and Rey Chow (2002).
