ENGL 204 - Comically Serious: Graphic Novels and the Art of Storytelling
FCARHU4 credits This course investigates one of the increasingly influential forms of literature: graphic novel. We will read a series of works that define and redefine the genre while illustrating a variety of artistic storytelling approaches to its central themes: politics, sexuality, class, violence, memory, cultural and ethnic diversity. Works include, among others, Bechdel’s “Fun Home”, Spiegelman’s “Mouse”, Satrapi’s “Persepolis”, and Shaun Tan’s “The Arrival”.
