CIME 226 - Intro to Audio Documentary and Drama

FC ARHU PRAX
4 credits
This course provides a general introduction to the histories and theories underlying audio documentary and docufiction from the 1920s to the 2020s. Rather than undertaking an encyclopedic survey, we will focus on how sonic scripts dramatize and problematize social scripts related to intimacy, nationhood, class, race, and what counts as a “normal life.” With this in mind, students will listen to programs that continue to shape how people think about what sonic storytelling can and should do. We will also strive to develop our own critical toolkits to analyze the aesthetics and politics of contemporary podcasts and radio programs. Interested students will have the opportunity to create their own sonic compositions.

This course is appropriate for new students.
