EAST 436 - Science and Technology in Early Modern and Modern East Asia

FC SSCI CD WADV
4 credits
How have science and technology interacted with environmental, social, political, and economic factors in East Asia from 1600 to the present? How did science and technology shape East Asia’s modernity? How did people with existing traditions of inquiry and production perceive, absorb, and modify Western scientific and technological practices?  This course provides a comparative platform for students to reflect on how people in East Asia have understood knowledge, skill, and the natural world from both non-Western and Western, early modern and modern perspectives.

This course is cross-listed with HIST-436
