HIST 364 - You Are What You Eat and Wear: Global Crops

FC SSCI CD WADV
4 credits
This course focuses on the history of cultivation, processing, and circulation of crops in a global context. By examining the stories of important crops, such as rice, wheat, cotton, indigo, tobacco, and sweet potatoes, this course not only demonstrates the ways in which the same crops have undergone different experiences in various social, cultural, and environmental contexts, but also emphasizes how crops have played a significant role in shaping things as small as our body and family and as big as environment, capitalism, imperialism, colonialism, and racism that transcended national boundaries.
