FCARHUCD4 credits This course provides an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of transgender studies. We will explore the political and academic motivations that gave rise to the establishment of this field of study, including foundational and shifting terminology, key theoretical frames, and interdisciplinary questions and methods. We trace the emergence and endurance of “trans” as a concept that intersects not only with our understanding of sex and gender, but also of sexuality, race, disability, nation, citizenship, and human-beingness. Thus, we ask how exploring the histories and current and future possibilities of transgender is important for how everyone-regardless of identity-understands life in an always-gendered social world.
This course is appropriate for new students. This course is cross-listed with CAST-219
