FCSSCICD4 credits How can we study social issues that require nuanced, empathetic approaches? In the social sciences, we rely on qualitative, ethnographic research based on long-term community investment and relationship building. Ethnographic methods provide deep understandings of social issues as they are experienced, revealing aspects of issues that may be lost in large-scale models. This course provides training in core qualitative research methods in the social sciences. This course covers classic ethnographic methods including participant-observation and interviewing, along with sensory and environmentally-focused methods, including soundscape research and collaborative mapping. We cover each stage of research including design, implementation, analysis, and writing up.
