FCARHUCDWADV4 credits This advanced reading seminar examines the historical and cultural production of subjects, objects, and emotions vis-á-vis Asian American studies. Bringing together works that engage performance, aesthetics, gender, sexuality, and technoscience, this course explores how ”Asian” racialization has been unstable across time, space, and who (or what) is being racialized. We consider racial forms that are inscribed on and off the body: from model minorities to racialized fears of contagion; from feminized subjects to ornamental objects; from yellow peril to minor feelings. This course unseats our notions of what constitutes a “body” and takes seriously the role of feelings, objects, and ephemera in Asian racial formation. Texts include films, novels, plays, poetry, and scholarly monographs. Recommended preparation: prior coursework in CAST or GSFS.
