FCSSCICD4 credits This course will examine both early and modern Latin American History through film. We will look at how feature filmmakers have depicted conquest, colonization, wars, and the struggles of independent nations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a focus on the lives of indigenous and Afro-descended Latin Americans. We will also dedicate significant attention to Latin American documentary filmmakers in the mid to late twentieth century, probing their choice of subjects and their directorial decisions; thinking about how to approach their films as primary sources, and also examining the larger historic movements the filmmakers were a part of.
