THEA 374 - Theater and Social ChangeFC ARHU 4 credits
This course offers an introduction to theater as a tool for social change and community engagement. Participants will learn to practice and facilitate exercises from Theater of the Oppressed, a set of techniques from the Brazilian theater director Augusto Boal, who envisioned performance as a “rehearsal for revolution.” With case studies, we will investigate theater and performance as practiced in settings including prisons, legislative assemblies, refugee communities, and disability justice organizations. What can theater change? What are its limits? The course will culminate in a community-engaged performance in partnership with a local organization or organizations.
Community-Based Learning This course is appropriate for new students.
