FYSP 042 - The River Nile: Power, Capital & Revolution in Egypt

This course follows the history of the Nile, particularly in Egypt within its Middle Eastern, East African, and global contexts, from the 7th century till the present day. It covers topics such as Islamic cities and their ruling elites and working-classes; peasants, land, and water; long-distance trade and global capitalism; epidemic diseases; colonial modernity; modern dams and irrigation technology and their environmental effects; the post-colonial nation state; neo-liberalism and westernized consumerism; subaltern and middle-class revolutions. Students enrolled in this seminar will be eligible to participate in an International Winter Term group project in Egypt in January 2026.
