ENGL 305 - James JoyceFC ARHU WINT 4 credits James Joyce has a reputation for difficulty, but his writing explores the idea of the everyman-and he claimed to have written Ulysses for everyone. He is one of Modernism’s most famous representatives, but for most of his lifetime he was either unknown or mocked for his literary experiments. His novels take place in hyper-specific parts of Dublin, and rely on extraordinary detail, but he had to exile himself from Ireland to write. We will read Joyce’s major works with an eye toward these contradictions, and become familiar with the writer hidden beneath the reputation. From the precise, traditional prose of Dubliners beyond the stream of consciousness and into Finnegans Wake’s world of the dark, this course will chart a path through one of the most infamous literary careers of the 20th century.
