Earth has maintained a habitable climate for billions of years, enabling the ongoing evolution of life as we know it. What aspects of the Earth system set and control its climate? How does the climate system respond to perturbations? This course will introduce Earth’s climate system and how it operates on timescales ranging from months to billions of years. Topics include an introduction to Earth system science, climate forcings and feedbacks, modern climate patterns, and global climate change-past, present, and future. Labs will focus on developing a deeper understanding of topics while also learning how to interpret climate data. Field trip(s) required.
