CIME 307 - American Cinema in the 1970’sFC ARHU 4 credits This course focuses on what is called the New Hollywood, which was marked by the appearance of new writers, actors, and directors working in the studio system. This is an era of significant change not only in the movies but in the United States as a nation. We will try to understand this era in its own moment and ask how these movies continue as a presence in the twenty-first century. We will also examine the beginnings of the independent cinema movement, the emergence of Black and women directors in American cinema, and the early stages of the summer blockbuster franchise/series-action movie. We’ll explore the new themes and aesthetics of the decade as well as cinema as a business and a part of the larger social and cultural situation and political context of the decade.
Prerequisites: CIME 290, ENGL 299, or CMPL 200. This course is cross-listed with ENGL-307
