ENGL 292 - Shakespeare and Social JusticeFC ARHU WINT 4 credits How can Shakespeare’s plays help us engage in meaningful ways with our own historical moment and induce social change? Shakespeare’s plays often resisted convention, thwarted censorship, and critiqued injustice. Yet they have often been bolstered by retrograde cultural values and even white supremacy. How can we intervene to create many, diverse Shakespeares? And how can we study the structures and ambitions of early modern literature to animate our own intellectual, ethical, and creative pursuits? In this class we grapple with the past not only for its own sake, but also to help us recreate the world we live in now.
