FYSP 035 - Reel vs. Real: Decoding Media Representations of the Arab WorldFC ARHU CD WINT 4 credits This First-Year Seminar introduces students to the complexities of media representation in the Arab world and the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The course examines how Arab culture and society are portrayed in both Arab and Western media, encouraging critical comparisons between these narratives. Students will engage with a diverse array of materials, including documentaries, news reports, social media platforms (such as X and TikTok), films, and other multimedia sources. Through these mediums, students will analyze the construction of narratives about the Arab world. Key themes explored in the seminar include identity, power, politics, and resistance, focusing on how these narratives influence perceptions both within the Arab world and internationally.
