FYSP 046 - Music on the Stage from Mozart to MusicalsFC ARHU WINT 4 credits Can music anticipate a dramatic twist in a film? Could it reveal what a character won’t say out loud in a musical? Or shape our ideas about gender, race, and class in an opera? Whether in films, musicals, or operas, music informs how we perceive and interpret audiovisual media. In this class, we will develop listening skills and vocabulary to describe interactions between music and stage or screen. We will study operas, musicals, films, and other audiovisual media from a wide range of styles to understand these relationships and explore broader questions about performance ethics, the role of technology in multimedia works, and how gender, race, religion, and class are expressed and contested on stage. Field trip(s) required.
