LING 304 - SociolinguisticsFC SSCI CD QFR 4 credits This course explores how language variation indexes the fabrics of social life, and how it reflects, reinforces, and transforms social reality. Through contemporary works in quantitative sociolinguistics and adjacent fields, we will examine today’s multilingual, multicultural, and AI-transformed world. We will discuss how ideologies about linguistic variation have been used to invalidate and disempower speakers/signers of certain varieties, and ways language use and policy can mirror or ultimately contest social inequalities. Students will also develop analytical skills in linguistic structure and meaning through the lens of language variation and change.
